Through to the Quarter Finals!

The Women's 1st XI started the competitive fixtures for 2023 on Sunday with a first round Cheshire Cup tie away at Hayfield.

After winning the toss, Sophie Connor chose for Oakmere to field first on what looked a soft track and outfield. At 31/3 after 12 overs, the decision looked a good one with Emily Renshaw (3 overs, 1/7) and Connor herself (4 overs, 2/2) making early breakthroughs, whilst Sarah Worsdale (3 overs, 0/9) was also miserly. The back end of the innings saw Hayfield take advantage of a 32 metre boundary as they accelerated to finish on 83/3 from their 20 overs.

Oakmere's innings also got off to a similarly slow start as Worsdale (10) and Thea Murray-Williams (10) played sensibly on a difficult track, seeing off Hayfield's strike bowlers. Worsdale was the first wicket to fall to the last ball of the 9th over with the score at 31/1. Oakmere continued to struggle until Amy Jones got the ball to the rope for the first time in the innings with a six over backward square leg at the end of the 14th over. At 65/5 mid-way through the 18th over, Oakmere looked in trouble, but excellent running and strike rotation between Jones and Leah Holland saw Oakmere needing 4 from the final over. Jones obliged with a boundary off the penultimate ball of the contest to finish unbeaten on 35 from 28 balls (2 fours, 3 sixes).

A thrilling end to a fantastic game, which brought great applause from the travelling Oakmere supporters and Hayfield themselves.
