Christleton 1st XI (154 all out) Vs Oakmere 1st XI (158/6)
This Saturday, Oakmere 1st team travelled away to Christleton looking to build on a positive first game of the season. Losing the toss Oakmere were made to field first in the baking heat. A nervy start for the visiting side saw the batting team score quickly through the first powerplay, as the 1st wicket partnership moved past 50 in the 9th over. Runs began to slow slightly as tight bowling and energetic fielding applied some pressure to the batsman. Benedict Verma took the first wicket ending the 75 run opening partnership. Holland quickly followed with his first to leave the score at 77/2. Another partnership threatened as the home side moved to drinks 2 down. After the break a quick wicket fell as Seve Cupido entered the attack and in partnership with Matt Giles (conceding only 10 runs from his 6 overs) bowled extremely tightly. Only 7 runs came from the 5 overs following drinks as the scoring came to a halt. Cupido (3/19) struck two more times, in quick succession to pin the score back to 125/5. The two new batsmen watchfully survived a few overs until Holland re-entered the attack picking up the 6th. A procession of wickets came as Worsdale (1/35) claimed the 7th and Holland cleaned up the final three to take the first 5fer of the season with 5/25. An excellent comeback after a shaky start saw the home side finish on 154 all out off 45.2 overs.
Chasing a score within reach Oakmere still knew discipline was needed to complete the task. Jimmy Norton and Worsdale saw through the first 10 overs without loss of wicket, setting the platform for the chase. Norton (12) eventually fell ending the 39 run opening stand. Howdle joined Worsdale and the two remained watchful as some good bowling on a turning wicket slowed the scoring. Getting off the mark with consecutive boundaries, Howdle opened his account and began to rapidly increase the scoring rate. Howdle (33) struck three more 4s and a towering 6 in quick succession before falling with the score propelled to 89/2. Cupido came to the crease and kept the rate ticking past the drinks break. In the 30th over Worsdale (29) finally fell, run out and the score was 111/3. Holland, alongside Cupido, continued the work and chopping down the required runs. Cupido (31) was next to fall at 129/4, with only 26 needed for victory. The captain steadied the ship from one end as two more wickets fell from the other with 3 balls. At 143/6 slight nerves crept in however, Holland (24 not out) saw the innings through and with a boundary ended the match with the score at 158/6 off 41.3 overs.
Another strong showing leaves the 1st XI as one of two teams in the league to have won both games played so far. They look to continue the run of form when hosting Ashley 1st XI on the 2nd of May.
Oakmere 2nd XI (153 all out) Vs Upton 3rd XI (157/4)
Following the cancelation away to Cheadle Hulme in week 1, the 2nd XI started their season at home to Upton. On a glorious day Oakmere were pleased to have been invited to bat, with the pitch looking great and the outfield like lightning. Openers Dave Purcell (63) and Brandon Jones (35) made a great start, putting on a 96 run first wicket partnership. However, as the Upton slow bowlers were introduced to the attack, the pressure was put back onto Oakmere, slowing the scoring and taking regular wickets to turn the game back in their favour. With no other partnership exceeding 14 runs, the innings was ended at 153 all out after 47.3 overs.
A good opening spell by Henri Shovelton (2-29), backed up by Corey Lewis (0-22) and Percy Bratherton (1-16) made life difficult for the Upton batters. However, Uptons number 4 hitting 74 off 54 helped in guiding the visiting side to their target.
The 2nd XI travel away to play Ashley 2nd XI on 2nd May, looking to build on the positives from their first match and make it a 20-point weekend.
