Senior's Roundup - 2025 Season - Week 8

Mike Dodd13 Jun - 14:51

A rain-interrupted week still saw four senior fixtures played

Tattenhall 1st XI (186/4) vs Oakmere Men’s 1st XI (227/8) – Tattenhall won by 6 wickets (DLS)

The Men’s 1st XI travelled away to Tattenhall and Craig Phelan returned to winning ways at the toss, calling correctly and electing to bat first. With a wet outfield and rain around, the start was slightly delayed, but Oakmere’s openers did not let this deter them, getting off to a steady start with a first wicket partnership of 30 which ended when Matt Worsdale was dismissed for 18 at the start of the eighth over. James Norton continued in partnership with Josh Westwood, batting through numerous rain delays. The pair put together a 50 run partnership, making the score 88/2 off 18 overs when Norton fell for a well made 33. As the rain continued, a few more delays ensues and the overs began to reduce. Inbetween these delays Westwood continued on his way, pushing the score on and reaching his half century in the 30th over. Another 50 run partnership came for the 4th wicket with Craig Phelan (35) batting alongside Westwood. Westwood (68) fell in the 37th over with the score at 161/4. In the last 10 overs, while moving the score on, wickets began to fall at regular intervals, while Harry Poole (31*) stood firm at one end. Good running towards the end of the innings saw Oakmere finish on 227/8 from 47 overs.

After a long rain delay during the tea interval, Tattenhall’s target was revised to 186 from 31 overs. Oakmere got off to a strong start with Matt Howard taking a wicket in the first over. Tattenhall made use of the power play, increasing the scoring rate but wickets fell to Ethan Mackin (1/45) and a further one to Howard (2/26), making the score 51/3 off 10 overs. Some tight bowling in the middle overs from Westwood and Matt Holland kept the scoring down and caused the required run rate to rise slowly. However, Tattenhall did not lose any wickets in this period with a partnership growing steadily before a fourth wicket eventually fell to Matt Worsdale (1/31) in the 25th over with the score on 144. With large boundaries and a wet outfield, the Tattenhal batters had to run well and managed to up the scoring rate by putting the Oakmere fielders under pressure. Holland and Westwood managed to prevent any boundaries in the final 6 overs, with the game going into the final over with Tattenhall requiring four for victory. These runs came with three balls to spare to give the hosts the victory.

A close game for the Men’s 1st XI who will look to return to winning ways when hosting Warrington this week.

Oakmere Men’s 2nd XI (145 all out) vs Haslington 2nd XI (153/7) - Haslington won by 9 runs (DLS)

The Men’s 2nd XI hosted Haslington on Saturday, asking their visitors to bat first with rain around. Oakmere got off to a great start with the ball, with Hamish Shovelton and Mathew Giles (1/15) both striking in their first over before Shovelton picked up a further wicket in his third over to reduce Haslington to 23/3 before there was a lengthy rain delay. A Haslington counter attack came once the rain cleared with an aggressive 50 run partnership before Aaron Court (1/18) made the breakthrough. Jimmy Sidebottom slowed the scoring rate with the young spinner taking a couple of wickets (2/27). Shovelton (3/38) returned to the attack to make it 137/7 before another lengthy rain delay reduced the match to 38 overs a side. When the rain cleared Haslington had three overs left to bat, adding 16 runs.

Oakmere’s target was calculated as 155 from 38 overs. Despite an early loss of a wicket, Mathew Giles brought the counter attack, hitting three fours and two maximums from six deliveries before falling LBW for 25. Dan Faulkner remained at the crease and was joined by Dave Purcell. The pair steadily chipped away at the total, including an all run four before Faulkner was bowled for a well made 24 with the score on 72. Purcell was joined by Aaron Court and continued to inch towards the target. Purcell lost his wicket for 32 before Court (12) was bowled after trying to up the scoring rate whilst struggling with an injury. At 113/5 the game was finely balanced with Oakmere ahead of the required scoring rate, but a run out tipped the balance in Haslington’s favour. Brandon Jones (16) and Paul Guilford (13) had looked to have turned the topsy turvy game back in Oakmere’s favour with 21 required from the last five overs, but both fell in quick succession. With the required rate increasing a couple of run outs finished the game with Oakmere nine runs short of their target.

Lindow Men’s 4th XI vs Oakmere Men’s 3rd XI – Match Cancelled (Rain)

No play was possible in Wilmslow due to persistent rain.

Oakmere Women’s 1st XI (47 all out) vs Leigh 1st XI (53/1) – Leigh won by 9 wickets

The Women’s 1st XI had a tough afternoon on Sunday. After being asked to bat first by Leigh, Oakmere were bowled out for 47 with Nat Lyons (13) and Abby Lamidey (11*) being the only batters to reach double figures. Leigh reached their target in the 10th over of the chase for the loss of one wicket which was picked up by Sarah Worsdale (1/19).

Oakmere Women’s 1st XI (106/5) vs Lindow 1st XI (161/4) – Lindow won by 55 runs

The Women’s 1st XI were back in T20 action on Monday evening, hosting Lindow. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Oakmere put a great effort with the ball against a strong batting line up for the visitors. Kerry Hartnett (1/24), Kate Skelhorn (1/15) and Layla Dwyer (1/42) picked up a wicket each and there was a run out for Rach Warrenger as Lindow closed on 161/4 from their 20 overs.

Oakmere put up a fair fight with the bat in increasingly gloomy and soggy conditions, reaching 106/5 in their 20 overs. Rach Warrenger’s 37 was the highlight but there were good contributions throughout the order from Kerry (14), Layla (11), Amy Jones (17) and Maddi Lawson (11).
