Oakmere 2s 99 for 7 (in 53.3 overs), beat Stockport Georgians 95 all out (in 35 overs), by 3 wickets.
Oakmere youngsters snatch stunning victory.
Having finally won a toss, skipper Pete Jones had no hesitation in asking League leading Georgians to bat.
The decision was immediately rewarded as Matt’s first ball was inexplicably left by the batsman as it smacked into the top of middle stump. His first two overs saw him rip through the top order taking 4 wickets for no runs on his way to 4 for 6 in his spell of 6 overs. Georgian’s skipper & opener Kibble (dropped by Matt which would have given him a Five for) had watched the devastation and with N. Bailey patiently attempted to rebuild the innings in a partnership which took the score to 35 but the introduction of Cush to the attack saw the end of Bailey. Cush & Hutch worked their way through the rest of the batting, hampered by some more dodgy catching but boosted by a run out superbly taken by Pete from Ciaran’s throw. Kibble was ninth out for a valuable 43, as they subsided to 95 all out in 35 overs, Cush finishing with 4 for 27 as Nick picked up the last two catches.
Pete began positively but dragged on to give Georgians an early boost then Henry looked in good nick before missing a yorker. At 36 for 2 we looked in good shape, but Jonesy’s lbw started a disastrous run as Jameel (5 for 29 in 14) and Ormerod (a stunning 2 for 8 in 14 with 10 maidens) backed up by excellent fielding reduced us to 40 for 7 after 25 overs with MS & Dangerous failing to trouble the scorer.
Throughout the chaos, Ciaran had batted patiently and in Matt finally found a partner to rely on. Matt waited a dozen balls before getting off the mark then did so in style, launching a big six into the field which wiped out a rabbit. 10 runs in their first 10 overs became 32 in 20, leaving us needing 23 off the last 10 as they inched towards the win. After 2 runs in the next 4 overs, nerves were shredded on the boundary, but two 4s in the next over from Ciaran broke the shackles and all of a sudden Georgians were nervous. With their leading bowlers bowled out the pressure came on and their fielding suffered, desperate delaying tactics ensued in the gathering gloom, hoping that the rain would save them.
The end came in the 54th of the available 55 overs, as with the scores level, Matt hit the winning boundary as the rain lashed down. Ciaran’s effort in batting through for a 150 ball 45 not out was a magnificent display of temperament & technique, with Matt’s 25 not out off 87 balls a revelation in a winning partnership of 59 on a day when the next best was 26.
