Kingsley CC v Oakmere CC – 23rd April 2016
1st team make a positive start to the season, getting the better of Kingsely, but couldn’t take the final two wickets to secure victory.
New skipper Craig Phelan called incorrectly at the toss, and Oakmere were asked to bat first on a tricky deck. Likely to be running theme this year with the change in the points system.
Oakmere started positively, with the bad ball being punished and raced to 58-0, before Phelan, J. Norton and R Lyons were all dismissed quickly, and found themselves in a spot of bother at 63-3. Guest and Jones consolidated, before Kingsley’s overseas broke the partnership in the middle of a fine spell of bowling which saw him finish with 4-48.
After a watchful start, Jones cut loose in the final 10 overs, and finished unbeaten 78 from just 74 and pushed the Oakmere total to 171-8. He was well supported by Alex Hodges, before running himself out in an attempt to get Jones back on strike before the finish.
The Kingsley chase didn’t start well with Stoddard dismissed early and then after some aggressive strokeplay, Hartley was run out by Alex Hodges attempted to steal a single from a misfield. Some tight bowling from Jones, Howard and M Norton were able to peg the home team back, and after the loss of captain Mullins, the chase ground to a halt.
A resolute rear guard, and a couple of dropped catches meant that Oakmere weren’t able to take the final two wickets, and Kingsley finished their 45 overs 138-8.
Oakmere 12 points, Kingsley 6 points
