Junior Teams

Junior Cricket at Oakmere

Junior cricketers are the lifeblood of any Cricket Club and Oakmere is no exception. Over half our 1st and 2nd XI players in 2015 were products of our junior section. Our efforts to develop a junior friendly club have been recognised by the attainment and maintenance of ECB Clubmark status, demonstrating that our programmes of coaching and support provide a safe and welcoming environment for youngsters to learn and progress playing cricket.

To this end we have two Child Welfare Officers, one of whom will normally be present at all training Sessions.  They are Chris Hodkinson and Liz Guest.

Our Junior section is managed by the Club Chairman Phil Guest with the aid of a small committee of the Junior Team Managers.

For 2016 they are:

Under 15s – Mark Worsdale

Under 13s – Darren Hyde

Under 11s – John Young

For the first time this year (after a brief trial in 2015) we are adding an opportunity for even younger children with the ‘Oakmere Minis’ section, run by Roger & Helen Pickering. Aimed at 5-8 year olds (Foundation Stage to Year 3) it will focus on enhancing and developing physical literacy incorporating agility, balance, co-ordination, spatial awareness and the fundamentals of movement rather than being cricket specific, particularly at the younger end of the age range. For more details see the separate Oakmere Minis webpage.

All our coaching sessions are supervised by qualified coaches, under the guidance of Phil Guest (a Level 2 Coach). Our overseas player Harrison Jones will play a leading role, along with a number of coaches drawn from our club members (an additional 5 club members having gained Coaching qualifications this winter).

Juniors progressing to Senior cricket are protected by our insistence on all team Captains having up to date DBS (formerly CRB) certificates, in line with ECB and Cheshire League rules. Any concerns they or their parents may have can be discussed in confidence with the Child Welfare Officers.

New players at any age group are always welcome, come and see us at any of our training sessions, or contact Phil Guest, any of the Team Managers, or either of the CWOs.
